You owe me nothing in return...

I gave you countless amounts of outright acceptance if you wanted it
I gave you encouragement to choose the path that you wanted if you needed it
You could speak of anger and doubts your fears and freak outs and I'd hold it
You could share your so-called shame filled accounts of times in your life and I'd never judge it

(and there are no strings attached to it anymore...)

You owe me nothing for giving the love that I gave
Owe me nothing for caring the way that I did
I give you thanks for receiving it's my privilege
And you owe me nothing in return

You could ask for space for yourself and only yourself and I'd grant it
You could ask for freedom as well or time to travel and you'd have it
You could ask to live by yourself and only yourself and I'd support it
You could ask for anything you wanted anything at all and I'd understand it

(and there are no strings attached to it, anymore...)

You owe me nothing for giving the love that I gave
Owe me nothing for caring the way that I did
I give you thanks for receiving it's my privilege
And you owe me nothing in return

I bet you were wondering when the next payback shoe would eventually drop
I bet you were wondering when my conditional police would force you to cough up
I bet you were wondering how far you danced your way back into debt
This was the only kind of love as I understanded it that there really was

You could express your deepest of truths even if it meant I'd lose you and I'd hear it
You could fall into the abyss on your way to your bliss and I'd empathize with
You could say that you had to skip town to chase your passion and I'd hear it
You could even hit rock bottom, have a mid-life crisis and I'd hold it

(and there are no strings attached to it anymore...)

You owe me nothing for giving the love that I gave
Owe me nothing for caring the way that I did
I give you thanks for receiving it's my privilege
And you owe me nothing in return
